Girl Scout Gold Award Candidate Zoey
Hello!
I am Girl Scout Ambassador Zoey and a Girl Scout Gold Award Candidate! This is the highest award a Girl Scout can achieve. I have been a Girl Scout for over ten years and is the recipient of the Girl Scout Bronze and Silver Award.
I was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina. I am a Senior and Honors student at Cumberland International Early College High School on the campus of Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, NC.
My interests are in the field of Math and Science. After graduation from High School, I will be attending Wingate University Pre-Pharmacy Program. After completion of the Pre-Pharmacy degree program, I plan on attending Wingate's University School of Pharmacy and obtain a dual degree in MPH & PharmD.
I chose to do my Gold Award project on "Diabetes: The Education & Prevention of A Chronic Disease" to bring awareness and education about a disease that has become a national pandemic, especially among our youth. Diabetes has no zip code, race, color, or socio-economic class.
I chose this project because I see first-hand how diabetes has directly impacted my family, our friends and neighbors. For example, a family member that has diabetes experience issues with her vision, kidneys and sugar levels. She was diagnosed with diabetes after she didn't heal from a surgery. She is on several medications, which are high in cost. Our nextdoor neighbor passed away from diabetes complications after being bitten by a spider while working in her garden. A close family friend didn't know her daughter had diabetes until she was rushed to the hospital. With the closeness of each person, finding out that diabetes runs in our family and seeing reports about the rise in numbers of this disease, this increased my desire to learn as much as possible about being educated. It is expected that the "total number of people living with diabetes is projected to rise to 643 million by 2030 and 783 million by 2045." (IDF, 2023)
As a pharmacist, I want to bring awareness and education about the importance of incorporating a healthy lifestyle, proper diet and exercise, knowing family history, paying attention to lab results, and medication management, to help decrease this chronic and sometimes fatal disease.
